Schon sehr lange wollte ich mir die revitalisierten Sofiensäle in Wien 3, Marxergasse 17 und das dort befindliche Restaurant „The Room“ ansehen. Die 1845 erbauten Säle waren damals noch eine Schwimmhalle (Sophienbad), im Sommer konnte man hier baden und im Winter tanzen. Dazu wurde das Schwimmbecken mit Holzbrettern abgedeckt und in einen Ballsaal verwandelt. 2300 bis 2700 Personen konnten hier tanzen oder ein Konzert besuchen.
For a while now I wanted to check out the revitalized „Sofiensäle“ at Marxergasse 17 in the thrid district of Vienna, as well as the restaurant called „The Room“ which can be found there. The saloons, built in 1845, were a public swimming pool back then during summer, in winter it hosted dance parties. For that, the swimming pools were covered with wooden planks and turned into a ballroom. The buildings were big enough for 2300 to about 2700 people.
1913 wurden hier erstmals sprechende Filme präsentiert. Außerdem wurden die Säle für Bälle und Veranstaltungen weiterhin genutzt. 2001 brannten die Sofiensäle fast vollständig aus.
Nach langen Umbauarbeiten und vielen Zwistigkeiten wurden die Säle 2013 wieder eröffnet. Das architektonische Schmuckkästchen erstrahlte in neuem Glanz.
In 1913 the place showed the first movies with audio. Besides that the saloons were still used for all sorts of events. They burned down almost entirely in 2001.
After a lot of rebuilding and many difficulties the saloons were reopened in 2013. The architectural masterpiece was completely rejuvenated.
Der historische Saal – ich tanzte in diesem noch in den 1980er Jahren beim alljährlichen Ökista-Gschnas (Österreichisches Komitee für Internationalen Studentenaustausch) – und das Hauptportal in secessionistischem Stil wurden komplett renorviert. Das dem Sofiensaal umgebende Gebäude wurde als Wohnhaus und Hotel neu errichtet.
The historic saloon – I danced in it in the 80s at the annual Ökista-Festival (Österreichisches Komitee für Internationalen Studentenaustausch) – and the main entrance in secessionistic style were renovated completely. The building surrounding Sofiensaal was turned into an apartment building and a hotel.
Nun befindet sich bei und in den Sofiensälen das Ruby Sofie Hotel, ein John Harris-Fitnessclub und das Restaurant „The Room“.
Der Sofiensaal selbst kann für Veranstaltungen, Events und sogar Trauungen gemietet werden.
Today, at Sofiensäle you’ll find the Ruby Sofie Hotel, a John Harris-gym and the restaurant „The Room“.
Sofiensaal itself can be rented for events of all kinds and even weddings.
Das Restaurant „The Room“ befindet sich gleich bei den Sofiensälen und lockt Sonn- und Feiertags mit einem köstlichen Brunch. Wochentags kann man von 8:00 bis 16:00 Uhr spezielle Frühstücksvariationen in tollem Ambiente genießen.
Von der großen Auswahl überwältigt, verbrachten wir hier am Dreikönigstag gute drei Stunden in netter Gesellschaft.
The restaurant „The Room“ is located directly at Sofiensäle and offers a great Sunday and holiday Brunch. During the week you may enjoy the lovely breakfast variations in a great ambience from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M.
Blown away by the huge selection of stuff we spent a good three hours here on January 6th.
Mit Prosecco und Kaffee haben wir unseren Brunch begonnen. Schinken, Prosciutto, Antipasti, Käse in allen nur erdenklichen Variationen, Eier, Frischkäse mit Gemüse, Powidltascherln, Marmeladen, Müslis, Porridge, Croissants, Kuchen und Gebäck (darunter auch Brot von Joseph) und vieles mehr bekommt man hier am Buffet angeboten.
We started our brunch with Prosecco and coffee. Ham, Prosciutto, antipasti, cheese in every variation, eggs, cream cheese with vegetables, „Powidltascherl“, jams, cereal, porridge, croissants, cakes and pastries (even bread by Josef) and much more is available at the buffet.
Wir waren von der wirklich großen Auswahl an Speisen einfach überwältigt. Leider konnten wir aus diesem Grund auch nicht alle Köstlichkeiten probieren. Wir haben es versucht – ganz ehrlich – aber nach der Feiertagsvöllerei war es ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit.
We were simply blown away by the amazing selection of food. Unfortunately we could not try absolutely everything, there was simply too much. We tried – honestly – but after all the food you eat during the hollidays it was sheer impossible.
Was uns besonders positiv auffiel, war die überaus freundliche Bedienung. Wir wurden sehr nett begrüßt und sofort zu unserem Tisch begleitet. Einziger Minuspunkt: unser Tisch war leider nicht am Fenster platziert und deshalb war es auch etwas zu dunkel. Bei unserer nächsten Reservierung werden wir auf jeden Fall einen Fenstertisch wählen.
We also noticed the really friendly staff. We were greeted with greatest hospitality and taken to our table. Only downside was that our table was not next to the window and so it was quite dark. Next time we make a reservation we will definitely let them know that we’d like a table close to the windows.
